October 7, 2025 - Sag Harbor, NY – The Peconic Hockey Foundation (PHF) brought together legendary athletes, celebrities, and community supporters for an unforgettable day at the 2025 Legends Invitational, held Tuesday, September 30, at the prestigious Noyac Golf Club.
The annual fundraising event combined world-class golf with a series of engaging evening festivities, all in support of PHF’s mission: to grow the game of hockey through scholarships, training, and programs that make participation more affordable and accessible for families on the East End of Long Island and beyond.
Guests enjoyed a full day of golf alongside NHL greats and sports icons, followed by a cocktail reception, dinner, silent and live auctions, honorary awards, and speeches. The evening also featured casino-style fundraising tables, giving participants a chance to play for a purpose.
A Star-Studded Guest List
The Invitational welcomed an impressive roster of VIPs, including:
Mark Messier – NHL Hall of Famer and six-time Stanley Cup Champion
Jerome Bettis – NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl Champion
Matt Martin – Retired New York Islander and Special Assistant to the General Manager
Josh Bailey – Retired New York Islander
Stephane Matteau – Former New York Ranger and Stanley Cup Champion
Justin Williams – Three-time Stanley Cup Champion
Jack O’Callahan – 1980 U.S. Olympic “Miracle on Ice” team member
Kerry Fraser - One of the most recognizable referees in NHL history
Len Potter – Ownership Group of Seattle Kraken
David Ayres – The NHL’s beloved “emergency goalie” story
And many more legendary names from the worlds of hockey, professional sports and entertainment.
NHL Hall of Famer and six-time Stanley Cup Champion, Mark Messier, is a Board Member and supporter of the Peconic Hockey Foundation since day one.
“It’s been wonderful to watch the people behind the foundation and the passion they have to do something for the community and to build a rink for the kids. I feel lucky to be a part of it, to see it come to fruition and continue to grow the game.”
Additional support and guests in attendance included New York State Assembly Member, Jodi Giglio and Edgar Goodale of Riverhead Building Supply, who has been an intricate supporter of the facility from its inception.
Honoring Leadership and Legacy
One of the night’s most powerful moments came during the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Jon Ledecky, Co-Owner of the New York Islanders. Ledecky was recognized for his longstanding support of the Peconic Hockey Foundation, Peconic Ice Rinks, and the growth of youth hockey across Long Island.
In his heartfelt remarks, Ledecky praised the foundation for creating opportunities that allow children to thrive both on and off the ice. He reaffirmed the Islanders’ continued commitment to fostering community, expanding access to the sport, and ensuring that hockey remains a positive outlet for future generations.
A Community United by Hockey
The Legends Invitational serves as one of PHF’s signature fundraising events, with proceeds directly benefiting facilities, scholarships, training programs, and initiatives designed to grow the game and lower the barriers of entry into hockey. Proceeds from this year’s event will directly support the purchase of a new chiller for the foundation’s centerpiece achievement, Peconic Ice Rinks at Veterans Memorial Park, ensuring reliable ice quality and expanded programming for the community.
“Our goal has always been to make more hockey accessible for every child who wants to play and to bring a facility to the east end,” said Foundation President Troy Albert. “Events like the Legends Invitational not only raise critical funds but also bring the community together to support the cause and raise more awareness to our goal.”
The success of this year’s event reflects the growing impact of the Peconic Hockey Foundation and Peconic Ice Rinks, which, in partnership with the Town of Riverhead, has become a hub for hockey, skating, and community activity on the East End.
